Common Ground: ONUP’s part in a 2012 Venice learning exchange

In 2012, the Common Ground theme of the Venice Architecture Biennale became the starting point for a learning exchange involving young architects from Kosovo. ONUP Magazine’s December 2012 report records a competition that selected sixteen participants through essays on the theme.

The workshop ran from 16 to 22 November at the Arsenale and Giardini. The report credits coordination to the Architects Association of Kosova, Ideal Vejsa of MadenGroup and Leart Mullaademi of ONUP, with accompanying lectures by Ayhan Baymak and Sezgin Boynik.

For ONUP’s story, this is a documented example of participation in a shared educational effort. It brought writing, architectural observation and discussion into the same experience.

Revisiting the exchange places collaboration alongside publication in the platform’s history. The original report is the source for these details; this article does not claim that ONUP independently organized the Biennale or the entire workshop.

ONUP since 2009: architecture as a public conversation

ONUP began in 2009 with an independent publication focused on architecture and urban life in Kosovo. The platform’s existing introduction describes a mission built around exchanging information, bringing professionals together and helping a wider public engage with the built environment.

The early magazine archive makes that work tangible. Its January 2009 entries include architecture news, competition proposals and an introductory welcome. Publishing created a place where local developments could be encountered, discussed and remembered.

That editorial work is part of ONUP’s contribution: making architecture visible beyond the studio and placing it within a broader conversation about cities. Projects featured in the magazine retain the authorship of their architects; ONUP’s role is publication, context and exchange.

This retrospective introduces the archive as a record of those beginnings and a foundation for exploring the platform’s talks and collaborative activities.
