Architecture starts a conversation.

ONUP is an independent non-governmental organization (NGO) working in architecture and urban culture in Kosovo. It began in 2009 with ONUP Magazine, creating a place to share architectural work and discuss the changes taking place in our buildings, streets and cities.

Our work brings publication, public conversation and learning together. We are interested in the people behind a project, the decisions that shape it and the life that follows its completion. Architecture belongs in that wider discussion, alongside the everyday experiences of the people who use it.

Publishing from Kosovo.

Through ONUP Magazine and this platform, we give space to architecture, interiors, design and urbanism. Projects and profiles sit alongside stories from our archive and opinions about the built environment. Kosovo is our starting point, with a curiosity for ideas and practices elsewhere that can contribute to local discussion.

A photograph can introduce a building; a story can explain what it contributes. We want to make room for both, and for questions about public space, existing buildings, education and the care of places over time.

Meeting, learning and exchanging ideas.

ONUP’s activities extend beyond publication. In 2012, ONUP and Illegal Architecture co-organised an open lecture by Jim Stevens at the University of Prishtina, bringing digital fabrication and learning through making into the conversation. Our archive also records a collaborative learning exchange connected with the Venice Architecture Biennale that year.

In 2014, the first ONUP Talks programme, Home or Abroad, brought architects and artists working in the diaspora into discussion with local professionals and students. Recorded lectures give those conversations a life beyond the event itself and make them available to new audiences.

A conversation that stays open.

ONUP gives these experiences a place to continue. Explore the stories, watch the talks or read the blog. If you have work to share, an idea to discuss or a question about architecture and urban life in Kosovo, start a conversation with us.
